We’re in New York City for a quick stay of less than 24 hours. Walking from our hotel in the Fashion District near 7th Ave, we headed to the High Line, a walking trail and public park created from an elevated historic rail line above the streets of Manhattan’s West Side.
The stairs to reach the High Line Park.
The view in one direction looked like this.
The view in the other direction looked like this. We decided to head this way.
As you walk along the High Line, you get a different view of New York than walking at street level.
The High Line was built in the 1930s, to elevate freight trains 30 feet above the street where they were quite dangerous. Trains stopped running on the High Line in 1980 and the railway sat abandoned.
The High Line park runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street, between 10th & 11th Avenues. The first section of the High Line Park opened on June 9, 2009, while the second section opened in June 2011. A third section is in development.
At this section, you can see the Statue of Liberty in the distance.
This section includes water to cool your toes.
This section, toward the end of the line, features sun lounging chairs.
