We made a quick trip to Fort Worth, Texas this past weekend.
When you think of Ft. Worth, Texas, eating yellowtail sashimi in a Japanese izakaya-style restaurant is probably not the first thing that comes to mind.
Ah, discovery is one of the joys of traveling, and in less than 36 hours we discovered a number of fun things in the Ft. Worth area.
Our flight departed Kansas City, Missouri just after 8 am on Saturday morning. Thanks to having a companion pass on Southwest Airlines, it’s quick and relatively inexpensive for us to fly to Dallas Love Field.
In Dallas, we hopped into our rental car, plugged in the TomTom GPS, and followed its driving directions to Fort Worth, and on to Benbrook, Texas.
We were on a mission to spend time with our friends Jo Jo and Monte.
After meeting up, brunch was the first order of business. We fueled up with pecan pancakes and other southern breakfast goodness, before setting out on a hike.
Springtime in Texas means colorful wild flowers. Just watch out for the cactus.
We’d heard of Texas Bluebonnets, and had seen photos, but there’s no comparison to an in-person view. The Fort Worth area has received a lot of much-needed rain recently, adding to the vibrant colors.
After a post-hike nap, we headed to the Near Southside part of Fort Worth on Magnolia Avenue.
We were in search of great sushi.
As the owners of AmericasCuisine dining guide in Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, our friends Jo Jo and Monte know the area’s best dining establishments.
We had great sushi and many more small plates of delectable Japanese food at Shinjuku Station. The izakaya-style restaurant serves fun items for sharing such as ishiyaki flat iron ribeye sashimi that we seared ourselves on hot a riverstone.
The spider roll was fresh crunchy deliciousness, very much a step above your typical roll.
We capped off the evening with a wine-shopping stop at Goody Goody (what a fun name for a spirits store), to be consumed at home with a broad selection of new-to-us dark chocolate. (We have since located the Berry Medley Dark Chocolate Crunchy Clusters in Kansas City, and that is not a good thing for our calorie consumption.)
Sunday morning, we enjoyed one more walk before our drive back to Dallas Love Field. The TSA Pre-Check line was speedier than we’ve seen it anywhere, anytime.

Soon, we were back in Kansas City, happy from a fabulous weekend with friends in Fort Worth.
