Tips For Finding Dog Friendly Dining and Hotels When Traveling

Mr. H. P. - traveling dogFriends of ours were in Kansas City Saturday night, taking an overnight break during on a drive from Texas to Minnesota. We decided to meet for dinner, but we needed to find a restaurant where they could bring Mr. Mr. Handsome Pants, their dog who was traveling with them.

After a long day in the car, they understandably did not want to leave Mr. Handsome Pants alone in a hot car, or in a strange hotel room.

bring fido websiteMr. Jones did a Google search, and found the Bring Fido website. The website features all types of dog friendly establishments worldwide for people traveling with their pet. A quick search for “Kansas City” under the “Restaurants” tab brought up a number of dog-friendly dining establishments. Users of the site comment on each establishment and give ratings, as in five dog bones rather than five stars.

We were thrilled to find Lidia’s Kansas City as one of the featured dog friendly restaurants. Lidia Bastianich is an PBS television host, best-selling cookbook author, and a restaurateur with terrific Italian food. One of the comments noticed that the outdoor patio had been closed in, so we called the restaurant to double-check. Dogs are welcome on the outside patio, we were assured, on a first-come, first served basis.

Mr. Handsome PantsMr. Handsome Pants was a good dog, lying under our table during dinner, while we enjoyed Osso Buco, Grilled Salmon and Pollo al Limone.  (We did take Mr. H.P. for a nice long walk after dinner.)

IHG hotel website with petsWe also learned another dog-friendly travel tip for booking hotels. The InterContinental Hotels Group or IHG website, which includes a range of hotel brands such as Holiday Inn, InterContinental Hotels, Candlewood Suites, Hotel Indigo and many more, features a “Pet Friendly” pawprint icon on the booking site for each of its properties that welcome pets.

Mr. Handsome Pants likes IHG hotels. “Woof!”
