When we sailed on the 14-Day Premiere Voyage of Holland America’s Nieuw Statendam cruise ship, we sailed in a mid-ship category V verandah stateroom.
We had originally booked a verandah guarantee in category VH, as we are generally not picky about our cabin location on a cruise. The cruise, however, was in December, with eight days at sea crossing the Atlantic Ocean between Rome and Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
We knew there might be storms and rough seas, and we didn’t want to get “upgraded” to the category VB verandahs at the front of Deck 11. (When you book a “guarantee” you can be assigned to any cabin on the ship that is that category of higher.) You can check out the Nieuw Statendam Deck Plan here.

When offered a special paid upgrade, we jumped on the chance to select our cabin for a relatively small fare increase. We were able to be confirmed into Category V verandah stateroom #5072, which is right in the middle of the ship on Deck 5, the Gershwin Deck.
A Look Inside Cabin #5072

This is the view as you first walk into verandah stateroom #5072 on the Nieuw Statendam.

We liked the layout with the desk and the sofa.

On the wall across from the bed there’s a large, flat screen television and on-demand entertainment system. Beneath the television is an area to store all of your daily programs and other important papers. To the left is the triangle cabinets with wine glasses, an ice bucket and some storage compartments.

An important feature we love: bedside plugs and USB ports to charge your phone and other devices. There are also plenty of plugs and ports near the desk.

The glass-enclosed double shower has an adjustable shower head, and easy-to-use dispensers of Elemis brand shampoo, conditioner and body wash. It could have just been our imagination, but the bathroom area seemed a little smaller than on the Koningsdam, but the toilet was better positioned so that your knees did not hit the shower.

I appreciate the well-lit mirror over the sink and vanity. I do wish that Holland America Line would replace the bar soap with a bottle of liquid soap.
Bottom Line on Verandah Stateroom #5072 on the Nieuw Statendam
We loved this cabin. The seas were calm for nearly all of our cruise. We enjoyed ending our evenings by sitting on the verandah, enjoying the moonlight and the sounds of the ocean lapping against the ship.
