A Look Inside Obstructed Oceanview Cabin #4061 on Holland America’s Eurodam

Would you want to sail to Alaska with this lifeboat in front of your window?

We did on the 7-Day Alaska Explorer Cruise on Holland America’s Eurodam cruise ship, sailing August 31 – September 7th over the U.S. Labor Day holiday.

Why did we choose this Category HH Obstructed Oceanview stateroom? Well, because we:

1. booked last minute (we needed an Alaska “fix”)
2. it was a deal: this “oceanview” cabin was nearly the same price as an interior cabin
3. if we can’t have a verandah, we like these mid-ship staterooms on deck 4 of the Eurodam

Should You Book an Obstructed Oceanview Stateroom in Alaska?

This is the first view when you walk into cabin #4061 on Holland America’s Eurodam cruise ship. The photos (above) were taken when the ship was still in Seattle at the Smith Cove Cruise Terminal at Pier 91, so the view out of the window is of another cruise ship.

Cabin #4061 has many nice features, such as the largest flat screen televison that is also an on-demand entertainment system with a number of movies and television programs you can enjoy free of charge.

There’s a desk/vanity with plenty of US and European plugs and USB ports for charging phones, tablets, and other electronics.

Part of the desk is the mini-bar (you can add a few bottles or cans of water of your own.) Above is an ice bucket and glasses, and bottled water for sale.

Cabin #4061 also has a sofa and table — with space to enjoy room service breakfast if that is your thing. The silver bowl will be filled with fresh fruit if you fill out the card with your preferences.

Here’s the view of the cabin’s entry way, lined on one side with ample storage closets, and the door to the bathroom on the other side.

The bathroom features a shower/tub and a sink/vanity with relatively good lighting.

Other nice touches: bedside lighting and USB ports to charge your phone while using it as an alarm clock. Cruise ship cabins rarely have an alarm clock, so using your smartphone while it is charging is ideal. The customer service card was a new touch to make requests of your cabin stewards.

Bottom Line on Obstructed Oceanview Stateroom #4061 on Holland America’s Eurodam

We enjoyed our Alaska cruise on the Eurodam in stateroom #4061. We liked the cabin’s mid-ship location and easy walk down to the dining and entertainment amenities on decks 2 and 3.

Even though the view is obstructed by a lifeboat, the window still allows light into the cabin. This is particular important to Mr. Jones, who finds that his body wants to sleep all day in a interior cabin with no natural light source.

These Category HH cabins on the Eurodam are usually priced only slightly higher than interior cabins, and yet they qualify for “perks” that are sometimes only available to ocean-view and higher cabins.

We have cruised to Alaska several times, and we enjoyed our verandah stateroom on the Eurodam when we sailed to Alaska in 2018.

If you are planning a once-in-a-lifetime cruise to Alaska, and can afford it, we’d recommend a verandah staterom or suite. But if your on a budget, the obstructed oceanview is a spacious cabin, and the Eurodam has many public areas from which to view the glaciers, wildlife and wilderness as you cruise to Alaska.
