Traveling with Dogs? 7 Tips to Make Your Trip Easier

My two year old Shar pei/Hound mix, Casey, is constantly running around the yard full of energy. I seldom have to travel longer than an hour with her in the car, but within the next six months this may be changing.

I may be moving further away and will be taking Casey on longer adventures. I talked to my Grandmother, Darla Ham, who constantly traveled with her dog, Tiny.

7 tips from Grandma about traveling with dogs

1. Make sure your dog is either microchiped or has an ID with your name and contact information attached to the collar. You would not want to lose them while traveling, but at least there would be a way to reconnect you if it happens.

2. Make sure all your dog’s vaccinations are up to date. This way your pup stays healthy and happy during your traveling adventures.

3. In addition to a collar, be sure to pack a leash and/or a harness. This way your dog is allowed the freedom to walk around and explore, without the possibility of running off.

4. Pack a travel bag. Make sure you take water, food, and dishes for both, treats, toys and plastic bags to clean up after them. You want to make sure they are comfortable and well cared for at all times.

5. Take along your pup’s bed, blanket, and favorite play toy. It is important to take along familiar items to help them adjust to traveling arrangements.

6. Make sure you locate a hotel ahead of time that will allow pets. There is usually a small deposit required, but it will make the trip less stressful knowing you already have pet friendly locations lined up.

7. Above all, traveling with dogs can make for wonderful experiences but make sure you care for them during the journey. Remember to stop for food and water breaks and never leave them unattended in a vehicle during extreme hot or cold weather. Casey&Maverick

8 Views of New Zealand’s North Island

Auckland to Wellington, the North Island of New Zealand lives up to the talk about all of its splendor.

1. Here’s a view of Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city.

2. Here is the Sky Tower in Auckland. Visitors who are really brave can walk around the outer rim, or jump from the top to the ground. Watch someone make the jump in this video by TravelingWithTheJones.

3. Auckland is surrounded by water, which makes for great views. The city is built on extinct volcanos.

4. A kiwi bird at the Auckland Zoo New Zealanders are often called Kiwis.

5. Sheep speckle the North Island countryside.

6. A beautiful river in New Zealand’s North Island, home to one of the highest commercially rafted waterfalls in the world.

7. At Taupo Bungy jumping location in Taupo, New Zealand.

8. Leaving Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city, heading to the South Island.

9 Fun Facts about Washington DC

After talking with a friend about my plans to visit Washington DC, he shared some fun facts he learned about the city while he lived there.

Here are 9 Fun Facts about our Nation’s Capital.

1. If you drive around the Iwo Jima Memorial, you can see the flag rising into the air.

2. If you count all of the hands on the Iwo Jima memorial, there are 13 instead of 12. There is an extra hand helping raise the flag.

3. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier has never been unattended; it has remained guarded since its establishment. There has never been a moment that the guards have left their post.

4. Nothing inside of the United States Supreme Court building is American made. This way no one state can lay claim to it.

5. There are waterfalls at each of the 4 sections of the FDR Memorial because he could swim. Because of his wheelchair, his mobility on land was limited, but in the water he was free.

6. At the Lincoln Memorial there is a face hidden on the right, rear side of Lincoln’s head. Hidden in the curls you can see Robert E. Lee’s face looking toward Arlington House, which was Lee’s original plantation.

7. On the back side of the World War II Memorial, you will find a picture of Killroy, a famous comic. Although it is graffiti, it was not removed because it was so iconic during the war. Photo by Jason Coyne.

9. Across from the White House you will find Concepcion Picciotto, the longest protester the United States has known. She has been there, protesting nuclear arms since 1981. She established residence with a small shack made out of pallets and tarps. A law was passed to forbid camping out overnight, but since she was already there, they couldn’t make her leave. If she leaves the park for more than 30 minutes at a time, they will be able to force her to pack up her camp and leave. Photo by George Kauper.

Destination Discovery: The Cruise Room in Denver, Colorado

Denver might be a long way from the ocean, but it does have a connection to the Queen Mary ocean liner.

Nearly hidden off the main lobby of Denver’s historic Oxford Hotel, the legendary Cruise Room is downtown Denver’s first bar, opened the day after Prohibition was repealed in 1933. The Cruise Room was fashioned after one of the lounges on the Queen Mary.

The bar features original Art Deco wall panels depicting “toasts” from around the world, bathed in chrome and neon lighting. The wall panels of international revelers were created by Denver artist Alley Henson. Other that several updates over the years, the bar maintains it’s original furnishings and look from 1933. One of the panels, featuring Hitler in a Nazi “toast” was removed during World War II.

The drink menu offers an array of martinis and classic cocktails. Food is available from the kitchen next door, although we think this is a place to have a pre- or post-dinner cocktail.

Ice cold martinis are served in coupe champagne glasses.

Our Denver friends Mark and Tammi introduced us to the Cruise Room.

The Cruise Room is open 7 days a week from 4:30pm. It is located at 1600 17th St. in Denver’s LoDo neighborhood.
