Traveler Interview: Brenda Richman

Brenda Richman grew up in Kansas City and completed her Bachelors and Masters in Business at local universities.  Her love of travel began as a child. She spent over 10 years traveling frequently for work as an insurance marketing executive.  Since leaving her corporate career to pursue more entrepreneurial ventures in 2007, much of her travel is again about an adventurous love of experiencing the world.

We love to hear about others travelers’ adventures and discoveries.  In this “Travel Chat”,  Brenda shares some of her travel insights, as well as gorgeous photos from Hawaii, one of her favorite destinations.

The Jones:  What inspires you to travel?

Brenda: My sense of adventure!!!   As a lifelong learner, travel immerses me in a total learning environment of new experiences which energize me and increase my openness and creativity.

Kauai, Hawaii

Brenda: Spending time in gorgeous settings – nature, art, gardens, and architecture –  feeds my soul and brings me a deep peace, a sense of freshness and relaxation.

I also love creating a deeper bond and a wealth of new memories with those I love most by sharing travel days filled with special experiences.

What have been your favorite travel destinations?  Why?

Brenda: My travel preferences are uncrowded, less developed, peaceful scenic destinations.  I really love the beach, ocean and sun.  Thus my most frequent destination is Hawaii, especially Kauai. I love its extreme beauty combined with a slow lifestyle and uncrowded beaches.  I enjoy sports, wildlife and adventures there – scuba diving, zip-lining, powered hang gliding and zodiac boat trips.

What have you learned from traveling?

Brenda: About the world and about people, how we are similar and at the same time different, which also teaches me more about who I am.  Twice I have had the opportunity to take month long trips.  It has been extraordinarily enlightening to step away from life’s busy agenda and learn to more fully enjoy the moment and not think about what needs to be done.

I also loved New Zealand and its incredible geographic diversity in such a small, beautiful place.  Island beaches, geothermal geysers and hot springs, mountains, forests, glaciers, fjords, lakes and wildlife all in two unforgettable islands.

I can’t leave out a number of great Caribbean Island trips filled with superb beaches, people, warm waters and diving in Culebra, St Kitts, Nevis, Tortola, Cozumel and Bonaire.

Why do you think travel is important?

Brenda: Travel helps us realize that our way of living and seeing life is just one of countless choices.  It reminds us that everything is not about us and that life is hundreds of daily choices.

What fuels your travel passion?

Brenda: My love of travel began as a child with great family trips.  Since then, almost anything – reading books, hearing about other’s experiences, seeing great pictures – prompts my ever ready urge to head out on a new adventure!

What destination has surprised you most, either good or bad?

Brenda: I had no idea how fascinating the world living beneath the sea is until the Great Barrier Reef in Australia inspired me to begin scuba diving!

I thought the extreme height of the zip lining in the jungle outside Puerto Vallarta would be scary.  Sure it was exhilarating, but the sense of being air born was awesome and addictive!

Despite the many great things to do and see in New York City, I’ve discovered that I really need more green space and less people in my travel experiences.

What tips do you have for creating a great trip?

Brenda: When planning a trip and selecting a destination, be clear about what type of experiences are priorities for you and your travel companions.  Research and plan an agenda with expectations that are realistic.  I start with really great guidebooks and supplement with internet research and others opinions.  This lets me compare expert opinions with what’s most important to me.  Relax and be flexible when unexpected changes happen.

What’s on your travel “bucket list”?

Brenda: Scuba diving Palau and Belize, Chartres Cathedral and the Loire Valley in France, Florida’s panhandle beaches, Caribbean Islands – St Johns, Turks & Cacaos, rafting Grand Canyon’s Colorado River, Arizona’s Havasupai Canyon and Falls.

Are you a beach-lover like Brenda? What’s your favorite warm water destination?

A Peek Inside the Prague Marriott Hotel

Something we find most insightful when choosing a hotel are photos shot by other guests rather than those on the hotel website. To return the favor, we occasionally offer a look inside hotel rooms during our recent stays.

A Look Inside Room 528 at the Prague Marriott Hotel

We just returned from a six-night stay at the Prague Marriott Hotel located near Prague’s historic Old Town Square.  Five of our six nights were booked with Marriott Rewards points.  After spending more than 20 hours traveling between flights and connection layovers, we were thrilled to quickly be checked into Room 528 upon our arrival to the Prague Marriott.

Room 528 is on the fifth floor of the seven-floor hotel.  It’s not a standard room but a two-room suite.

First you enter the living room area which includes a nice work desk that you can’t see in this photo.

The living room has its own bathroom.

The bedroom is spacious with a comfortable king-size bed.

In addition to ample closet space and drawers, the bedroom contains the master bath.

This master bathroom features a tub/shower.

Turn down chocolates every evening included the next day’s weather forecast.

The Lobby Lounge featured a delicious Pomegranate Ginger martini.  The complementary citrus-flavored olives are the best we’ve simply couldn’t stop eating them.

We found the Prague Marriott to be an ideal hotel for a holiday vacation or a business stay.  The two-room suite allowed plenty of space for the two of us plenty of space for each of us to get some work done without disturbing the other from enjoying a relaxing holiday.

We also appreciated the Prague Marriott’s two-story executive lounge with its European and all-American breakfast choices as well as a complimentary cocktail hour each evening. We found this hotel well worth the Category 6 Reward Level in the Marriott Rewards Program.

Have you stayed at the Prague Marriott Hotel?  What was your impression?

Traveler Interview: Danielle Smith

Danielle Smith is an agricultural communications student at the University of Arkansas. She grew up in Stilwell, KS and moved to Fayetteville last summer after graduating from Johnson County Community College.

Traveling during the past few years — to six countries and multiple states —  has fueled Danielle’s passion for travel.  Currently, Danielle works as a social media intern with VentureTime Travel.

When she graduates from college in May, Danielle plans to move back to the Kansas City area, where she wants to work in communications and marketing for a company involved in agriculture.

We were curious to learn more about Danielle’s passion for travel, and her most recent adventures.

The Jones:  What inspires you to travel?

Danielle: I love to visit new places and learn about other cultures. There are so many different and interesting things to see in the world. I mostly enjoy seeing different landscapes and architecture. Traveling anywhere is an experience and I love to learn from the places I visit.

Danielle and her host family from Belgium. Find more pictures of Danielle’s Belgium adventure on her Facebook page.

What are some of the places you have recently visited?

Danielle: I kicked this year off by traveling to New Orleans and going on a cruise. The cruise took me to Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, and Cozumel. Then in May I participated in a study abroad trip where I lived in Belgium for three weeks and also traveled to Paris and London. A few weeks ago I headed to the Southwest to spend some time in beautiful New Mexico.

What’s something you’ve learned from traveling?

Danielle: One of the best things I have learned about traveling is to simply relax and take it in. Don’t try to rush around and see everything. Pick one or two things to see and truly enjoy what they have to offer.

Have you always enjoyed travel? What contributed to your love of travel?

Danielle: I have always wanted to travel. My family traveled some when I was younger, but mostly to surrounding states. As I have gotten older my yearning for seeing the world has really grown.

Danielle visiting Bruges, Belgium this summer.

What have been your favorite travel destinations?  Why?

Danielle: I don’t think I could pick a favorite destination because everywhere I have been has had something special to offer that I loved. I will say that I love traveling to the ocean, no matter what ocean it is; I just love the water.

Hanging out on the beach in Jamaica.

Why do you think that travel is important?

Danielle: I think travel is extremely important and everyone should try to visit new places as often as possible. Traveling teaches us about other places and other people. It gives us a better understanding for the world and why other people do things differently or think differently than we do.

What destination has surprised you the most, either good or bad?

Danielle: I think the most surprising place I have ever been is Jamaica. I was shocked at this countries kindness and sense of humor. The people in Jamaica are wonderful and have an amazing outlook on life. They are positive and use humor constantly. I felt more positive and lighthearted when I left there.

From your travels, do you have a practice or insight that makes your travel experiences more enjoyable and/or memorable?

Danielle: Don’t try to plan your entire trip down to the minute. Have a general idea of what you want to do and the things you want to see, but a tight schedule can lead to be rushed and feeling stressed. Travel is about relaxing and enjoying the moment.

We just arrived in Prague last night after a long series of connecting flights and layovers.  After a good night’s sleep we were up early, ready to explore.  While waking up too early can be a negative side effect of jet lag, we’ve learned there’s nothing better than to get up and start walking in your new destination.

Views from an Early Morning Walk Around Prague

Located in Prague’s Old Town Square, the Old Town Hall Tower houses the famous Astronomical Clock.

A walk down the Old Town side of the Vltava river offers a glimpse of Prague Castle in the distance.

An interesting tribute to a Prague artist.

Walking across the Manesuv most (bridge) offers a view of the Charles Bridge.

One of the bronze statues in the Wallenstein Garden, near the Czech Senate Building.

Ahh! Our first espresso in Prague.

With the espresso, we had to try the famous Apple Strudel served with vanilla sauce and whipped cream.

The Statue of St. John of Nepomuk is one of 30 statues that flank the Charles Bridge.

Petting the brass dog is a tradition thought to bring good luck.

We can’t wait to ride on one of these trams that whip around Prague.
