In early December we spent three nights in Rome before joining a transatlantic cruise.

Walking around the Eternal City, enjoying the views.
Visiting Rome in December means fewer tourist crowds. Plus, the city is decorated for Christmas.
Yes, it can be wet and cold in December in Rome.
Most of our three day stay, however, was sunny and pleasant.
From views of the stone pine trees during sunrise walks around the Prati neighborhood where we stayed….
we ducked into the neighborhood market — the Mercato dell’ Unita.
Rome is full of wonderful views, like of the Vatican in the distance as we crossed the Tiber River.
Churches seem to be on every street. While they may look non-descript on the outside, the interiors are glorious.
This is the magnificent ceiling frescoes at the San Giacomo in Augusta church.
Of course, we had to return to Rome’s iconic locations such as the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona.
A walk inside the Pantheon — to look up and marvel at the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome — that’s still in use more than 2000 years after its construction.
Although the sun sets early in December, the evening views of Rome are still special.
